Plot

A Gypsy family travels the French roads during the Second World War, followed by Little Claude, a young boy seeking a new family after his parents "left and never returned". Upon reaching a town where they traditionally stop for a few months and work in vineyards, they learn that a new law forbids them from being nomadic. Theodore, the town's mayor, and Miss Lundi, the schoolteacher, protect and help the Gypsies. Despite this, They are arrested and placed in an internment camp. Theodore manages to rescue them and gives them a piece of property where they must settle. But the Gypsies' deeply ingrained thirst for freedom makes this sedentary lifestyle difficult to bear. After Theodore and Miss Lundi are arrested for resistance, the Gypsies decide they must get back on the move in order to remain free.

Just viewed "The Howl" in its entirety on the big screen at the Egyptian Theater here in Hollywood tonight. Aptly named. Italian Freakout '70. Makes "Gas-s-s-s" (1970) look like a brief Sunday school production. Some very compelling scenes. But a bit of an endurance test. Avoid if you can't take watching a duck get its head lopped off in closeup (the lady behind me didn't like that too much). Lots of nudity, lots of talking, a fair amount of violence, and, being a late-60's/early-70's movie, lots of people running around outside. Zero story. Big on visuals, social commentary, and ideas. Surreal, somewhat disturbing, at times beautiful. They sure don't make 'em like this any more. Pretty interesting soundtrack, as well. The sound was REALLY good on the print I just viewed.

This is not a documentary, it's exploitation veiled as a docudrama as were a slew of sexploitation flix back then. Sort of like a 'Mondo Cane' for the raincoat crowd, and these films were prolific at that time prior to the advent of triple X hardcore movies. As far as this slice of sleaze goes, it's fairly entertaining for those of us who were around then, and it will bore the pants off (or maybe not) anyone under 40 because it's dated, as stated by the other reviewer. But the nudity and sleaze factors are considerable, and there's a few laughs involved (though not intentionally). For fans of 60's/70's grindhouse and sexploitation, it's worth a looksee, made in the U.S.A.

Several attractive porn stars have been invited to join the cast of what is sure to be an event picture in the porn industry. The mysterious director is in disguise, but nobody seems to mind. As the scenes play out (both on the set and off) there is a sense of optimism in the air. The actors are enthusiastic (two may actually be falling in love) and the goofy crew members are pleased with their work. There is one problem: a masked killer is on set and steadily killing off the talent. Porn Shoot Massacre is a title that is almost critic-proof. Nobody watching this should be expecting Kubrick. Terrible actors wander around cheap sets under the direction of a man wearing the worst disguise in years. The film is more focused on character than plot, which is a nice change of pace. The script may not be the strongest, but the writing attempts to bring some depth. The film is strongest when it mocks the ultra low budget world that has spawned it.

Plot

Plot

Based on a true story a group of East Berliners escaping to the West. Harry Melchior was a champion East German swimmer at odds with the system under which he has already been imprisoned. The participants struggle not only with the massive logistics of their task, but betrayal from friends in the East. And always the East German police are close to discovering the plot.
